A flammable liquid is a liquid that is readily ignited in air at ambient temperature, i.e.it has a flash point at or below the nominal threshold temperature defined by many national and international standards organizations. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines liquids with a flash point at or below 199.4 °F (93 °C) as flammable. Prior to bringing regulations into line with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) in 2012, OSHA considered flammable liquids as those with a flash point below 100 °F (37.8 °C). Liquids with a flash point above 100 °F and below 200 °F (93.3 °C) are classified as flammable.Studies have shown that the actual measure of a liquid's flammability, known as the flash point, depends on the local air pressure, meaning that at higher altitudes where the air pressure is lower the flash point is also lower.
Categorization
Both OSHA and GHS further divide flammable liquids into 4 categories:
Class I flammable liquids are liquids with a boiling point ≤ 95 °F (35 °C) and a flash point < 73 °F (23 °C)
Class II flammable liquids are liquids with a boiling point > 95 °F and a flash point < 73 °F
Class III flammable liquids are liquids with a flash point > 73 °F and ≤ 140 °F (60 °C)
Class IV flammable liquids are liquids with a flash point > 140 °F and ≤ 199.4 °F
These classifications depend on the set altitude and atmospheric pressure since both boiling point and flash point change with pressure.
Fire prevention
Fire prevention is a function of many fire departments. The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public on preventive measures to prevent potentially harmful fires and how to survive if one does occur. It is a proactive method of preventing fire emergencies and reducing damage from fires. Many fire departments have one or more firefighters, and this may also be a day-to-day duty of firefighters. In the general sense of preventing hazardous fires, many aspects are discussed in the article Firefighting and Fire Safety. In the U.S., national work on best practice is in Vision 2020.
Target audiences
Students
Children are the primary target of fire prevention knowledge.Firefighters regularly visit schools to teach students the basics of fire prevention and fire safety, including how to evacuate from a burning building and how to prevent fires by avoiding dangerous activities like playing with matches.
Elderly and disabled
Older adults and people with disabilities may be at greater risk during an emergency due to reduced mobility or an unawareness of the dangers they are in.Fire prevention awareness usually involves ensuring that these groups have a clear plan, know what to do in the event of a fire urgently and have easy access to emergency exits.
Landlord
In many jurisdictions, landlords are responsible for implementing fire prevention and fire safety measures under various laws.
Lessons
Fire prevention education can take the form of videos, brochures and banners.Often, information and lessons are simple reminders. Common courses taught during fire protection seminars include:
Stop, drop and roll
Main articles: Stop, Drop and Roll
Stop, drop and roll is often taught as part of fire education efforts because it is both a simple technique and an effective way to extinguish burning clothing. It's especially good for kids, who might panic if their clothes catch on fire, and they don't know how to put it out.
Installation and maintenance of smoke detectors
Often taught more to adults (especially homeowners), a central part of fire prevention awareness involves encouraging people to ensure they have an adequate number of smoke detectors in their homes, and that they are kept in good working order and tested regularly. These measures can significantly reduce the number of deaths from home fires, especially at night when people are sleeping. Smoke detectors often emit a constant beep when the battery is low, and a key part of fire prevention propaganda is to encourage people to replace the battery in a timely manner, rather than just taking the battery out and letting the beeping stop.
