The dust removal system is an air quality improvement system used in industrial, commercial and household production workshops to improve breathable air quality and safety by removing particulate matter from the air and the environment. The working principle of the dust removal system is capture, convey and collect.First, the dust must be captured or extracted. This is accomplished with devices such as capture hoods to capture dust at its source. Many times, the machine that produces the dust will have a port that allows a direct connection to the pipe.Second, the dust must be conveyed. This is accomplished through ductwork that is properly sized and manifolded to maintain the consistent minimum air velocity required to keep the dust in suspension for delivery to the collection facility. Wrong sizing of pipes can cause material to settle and plug in the piping system. Finally, collect the dust. This is done in a number of ways, depending on the application and the dust being handled. It can be as simple as a basic straight-through filter, cyclone separator, or impact baffle. It can also be as complex as an electrostatic precipitator, multi-stage baghouse or chemically treated wet scrubber or stripper.
Smaller dust collection systems use a single-stage vacuum to create suction and filter the air, where waste is sucked into an impeller and stored in a container such as a bag, bucket or canister.Air is circulated to the plant after passing through filters to capture smaller particles.Larger systems employ a two-stage system, using pre-collection devices such as cyclones or baffled cans to separate larger particles from fine dust before drawing the air in through an impeller. Air from these units can then be vented outside or filtered and recirculated back into the workspace.Dust collection systems are often part of a larger air quality management plan that also includes large airborne particle filtration units mounted on the ceiling of store spaces and systems of face masks worn by workers.Air filtration units are designed to handle large volumes of air to remove fine particles (2 to 10 microns) suspended in the air.Face coverings come in many forms, from simple cotton face coverings to elaborate respirators with canned air whether they're needed or not is determined by the circumstances in which workers work.In industry, round or rectangular ducts are used to prevent dust accumulation in process equipment.
Dangers of neglect
Proper dust collection and air filtration are important in any workspace. Repeated exposure to wood dust can lead to chronic bronchitis, emphysema, "flu-like" symptoms and cancer.Sawdust also often contains chemicals and fungi that can become airborne and penetrate deep into the lungs, causing illness and damage.Another concern is the possibility of dust explosions.
