Is the working environment of your lab room safe ?

The study found that the air pollution in rooms containing chemical drugs is 100 to 400 times higher than ordinary indoor pollution. There are 111,000 deaths caused by indoor air pollution in my country every year. The death rate of laboratory workers is 42.7% higher than that of the average person. The average life span of laboratory staff is also 10 years shorter than that of the average person. Air pollution in the laboratory has long been the chief culprit for the physical and mental health of scientific researchers. What do researchers ignore when they concentrate on scientific research? Studies have shown that there are as many as 40 occupational diseases caused by chemical factors, and chemical elements such as organic solvents, sulfur oxides, and chlorine are all causes of diseases. At the same time, β-naphthylamine, vinyl chloride, arsenic and their compounds are also responsible for the high incidence of cancer among experimenters. However, since the incubation period from initial exposure to carcinogens to the occurrence of cancer is as long as twenty years or more, the prevention of occupational diseases and occupational cancers has not attracted much attention from the experimenters.

Functions of ductless fume hood

1. Release function

There should be a mechanism to absorb the harmful gas generated inside the fume hood to absorb the gas outside the cabinet, and to dilute it and remove it from the outdoors. Isolation function: A non-sliding glass window is used in front of the fume hood to separate the inside and outside of the fume hood. Heat resistance and acid and alkali corrosion resistance: some of the fume hoods must be equipped with electric furnaces, and some experiments produce a lot of toxic and harmful gases such as acids and alkalis, which are highly corrosive. The countertops, lining boards, side panels, and selected water nozzles and air nozzles of the fume hood should all have anti-corrosion function. Where strong acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid are used in the semiconductor industry or in corrosive experiments, the overall material of the fume hood must be acid-proof and must be made of stainless steel or pp material.

2. No backflow function

Should have the function that the airflow generated by the exhaust fan inside the fume hood will not reverse the flow of harmful gases into the room from the inside of the fume hood. In order to ensure the realization of this function, it is a good way to connect a fume hood and a ventilator with a single pipe. It cannot be connected by a single pipe, and it is limited to parallel connections in the same room on the same floor. Install the ventilator as much as possible. At the end of the pipe (or at the top of the layer).

3. Supplementary functions

There shall be channels or alternative devices for sucking in air from outside the fume hood when exhausting harmful gases.

4. Control wind speed function

In order to prevent harmful gases from escaping in the fume hood, a certain suction speed is required. The factors that determine the suction speed of the air intake of the fume hood are: the heat generated by the experiment content and the relationship with the number of air changes. The main ones are the content of the experiment and the nature of the harmful substance. It is usually stipulated that the general non-toxic pollutants are 0.25-0.38m/s, the toxic or dangerous harmful substances are 0.4-0.5m/s, the highly toxic or have a small amount of radioactivity are 0.5-0.6m/s, and the gas is 0.5m/s, granular material is 1m/s. In order to ensure such a wind speed, the exhaust fan should have the necessary static pressure, that is, the frictional resistance when the air passes through the ventilation duct. When determining the wind speed, you must also pay attention to the noise problem. When the air flows through the pipe, the limit is 7-10m. Noise will be generated if the air is over 10m. The normal laboratory (indoor background noise level) noise limit value is 70dBA. Lowering the wind speed also reduces the noise. Considering the cost and construction of the pipeline, the power of the pipeline and the exhaust fan must be carefully selected.
