A better smoke extractor
When you're soldering,you'll notice that the solder is fuming as the iron melts the metal,which as you probably guessed isn't good for you or your lungs at all. Various DIY filtration systems already exist on the internet,but these may only be about 5% effective at reducing contamination from welding.
My explanation is based on lead-free rosin cored solder,the type most commonly used by hobbyists at home.
Step 1:Particulate Matter
Fumes produced during welding fall into two categories: particulate matter and chemical gases.The main particles come from tin,silver and copper in most lead-free solders.
Particulate matter consists of very small particles that get caught in the air currents around us and start floating in the air.This occurs when the particle size is 10 microns or smaller.When particles are smaller than 2.5 microns,they can not only penetrate deep into your precious lungs,but also enter your bloodstream with ease.The first type of filter I used was a HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Filter).It is a dense fibrous mat that traps 99.9% of particles 0.3 microns or larger in size.To tell you a fun fact,this filter is excellent for stopping particles larger than 0.3μm and smaller than 0.1μm.The hardest to stop are the medium sized particles.As you'd expect,larger particles are easily stopped by hitting the filter walls.Now the tiniest particles are so small that they can easily collide with tiny water droplets and other matter floating in the air,making their motion random.This is called Brownian motion,and this random motion increases the likelihood of the particle touching the filter wall,where it gets stuck due to the filter's attractive force.Medium-sized particles are too small to impinge on the filter walls easily and not move in unstable Brownian motion.They can move with the airflow through the filter openings.
