How to use lab fume hood?

Publish Time: 2022-02-28     Origin: Site

A fume hood is an essential part of a laboratory. Its main function is to improve the environment in the laboratory, and to protect the laboratory equipment and instruments while ensuring the personal safety of the experimenters. In order to eliminate harmful gases in the laboratory to the greatest extent, the current fume hoods are designed with a three-stage exhaust structure, so that harmful substances have nowhere to hide in the laboratory.

Secondly, in order to increase the safety of the fume hood during use, in the design process, the fume hood adopts a streamlined handle, and there will be some gaps between the handle and the glass, which can ensure that all the The harmful gases produced are discharged from these locations to the greatest extent. In addition, a glass window will be installed on the fume hood, which is convenient for us to observe the process of the experiment, but this kind of glass is not our common glass material, but tempered glass, so there will be no problems such as explosion during use, and it will not affect us.

When installing the glass window, the fume hood will also design an anti-drop pin on it, so that even if there is an accident, the glass window will not fall down. This anti-drop pin will protect the safety of the experimenter and prevent the experimenter from being injured.

Service life of the fume hood

Fume hoods do not have a defined lifespan. At present, the fume hood of the manufacturer has not only made a great breakthrough in the principle of exhaust air, but also the material of the entire fume hood has been specially treated, which prolongs the service life of the fume hood to a certain extent. Fume hoods are often exposed to various harmful gases and substances during use. Even if the materials can prevent corrosion, if we do not pay attention to daily maintenance and cleaning, the service life of the laboratory fume hood will still be reduced. When we are using the fume hood, remember not to close the fume hood suddenly, especially after some experiments, it is very likely that some harmful gases cannot be eliminated and stay in the fume hood to cause corrosion and other effects on the cabinet body; in addition, ventilation The exterior of the cabinet should also be cleaned and cleaned regularly, and the fume hood and its pipes and parts should be regularly maintained and repaired.

Precautions for the use of fume hoods

1. Before using the fume hood, check whether the power supply, water supply, drainage, gas and other switches and pipelines are normal.

2. Turn on the lighting equipment and check whether the light source and the inside of the cabinet are normal.

3. Turn on the exhaust fan, within about 3 minutes, listen to whether the operation is normal.

4. When the fume hood is checked in the above order, if there is any problem, please suspend use immediately and notify the maintenance unit to deal with it.

5. Before the fume hood is shut down, the exhaust fan should continue to run for a few minutes to completely remove the exhaust gas in the cabinet.

6. After the fume hood is used, the inside and outside of the cabinet should be wiped clean, and all switches and windows should be closed.

7. Always ventilate the laboratory when the fume hood is not used, which is beneficial to the health of the test personnel.

8. When the fume hood is in use, 10 minutes of supplementary air (that is, open the window for ventilation) is performed every 2 hours. If the use time exceeds 5 hours, the window should be opened to avoid negative pressure in the room.

9. It is forbidden to do experiments in the fume hood when the fume hood is not opened.

10. It is forbidden to put your head into the fume hood to operate or view during the experiment.

11. It is forbidden to store or experiment with flammable and explosive materials in the fume hood.

12. It is forbidden to put the mobile power strips or wires in the fume hood.

13. It is forbidden to conduct experiments in which the organic substances prohibited by the state are mixed with high-chlorine compounds in the fume hood.

14. It is forbidden to place the tested substances in a fume hood for experiments without safety. Once the chemical substances are sprayed out, the power supply should be cut off immediately.

15. When moving the upper and lower windows, it is necessary to move slowly and gently to avoid the door handle from crushing the hand.

16. During the experiment, it is advisable to place the viewing window 100-150 mm away from the table.

17. The operation area of the fume hood should be kept unobstructed, and items should not be stacked around the fume hood.

18. When the operator is not using the fume hood, the ventilation counter should avoid storing too many test equipment or chemical substances, and long-term stacking is prohibited.
